On the calendar: Month of the Military Child – April 2009.
 April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, underscoring the important role military children play in our military communities. Sponsored by the Department of Defense’s Military Community and Family Policy, the Month of the Military Child is a time to applaud military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and challenges they overcome.

Spring Recess Slated for April 6-10.  Spring recess for schools in the Pacific is scheduled for April 6-10, 2009.  During that time, DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam will not sponsor, sanction, or authorize any school trips or vacation excursions for students. This is a matter of policy and is not related to any specific force protection concern. Parents are advised to carefully research any trips or activities that students are participating in during the upcoming spring recess and at other times of the year.  Each year, many tour companies offer trips to a variety of vacation spots. Some of these trips are marketed as senior trips and can be misleading to parents who think that the trips are sponsored and sanctioned by DoDDS.  There may be legitimate trips offered by community agencies; however, they are not connected with DoDEA.

Annual Soroban Contest in Okinawa and Mainland Japan.  It’s time to show that old technology can still set the pace in the modern world. DoDDS students will show their skills with the Soroban. Competition will be held at the following sites;

  • April 16 - Saesbo
  • April 29 - Okinawa
  • May 20 – New Sanno (All Kanto Plain Area Elementary Schools)
  • June 3 – Misawa

The Soroban has been used for thousands of years to do mathematical computations. Based on the abacus which Romans used to solve problems, the Soroban is a Japanese adaptation of a Chinese device. In the competition, children will solve progressively harder problems on their Soroban. The winners will be able to add 5 digit numbers faster than most of us could do on an electronic calculator. This competition is just a small example of how DoDDS students interact with the host nation and can demonstrate appreciation for its culture and history.

Administrative Professionals Week April 19-25.  Behind the scenes of any effective organization there are a host of individuals who work diligently to make things happen and inspire others.  It is during the week formerly known as Secretary Week that we recognize the incredible support we receive from the secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals who keep our schools and offices going. This year’s theme, “Excellence in Action,” denotes how conscientious and dedicated our administrative professionals are as they reach for success in today's ever-changing business environment by fostering collaborative relationships with military leaders, teachers, resource managers, and colleagues.

Teacher of the Year Award Program, 2010.

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has been invited to participate in the National Teacher of the Year Program sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers.  Each district may select one teacher to be considered for the DoDEA Teacher of the Year.  A panel will convene at DoDEA HQ in early October to select the DoDEA Teacher of the Year from district nominees.  The DoDEA Teacher of the Year will represent the “state” of DoDEA in the national competition. The completed application with the principal’s endorsement and the letter of nomination should be submitted to the district superintendent or designee on or before May 1, 2009.

Advance Placement Course Examinations in May.

This program offers students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still in high school and is designed to prepare students for nationally administered and recognized examinations given each May.  Students who successfully pass the exam may receive college credit or advanced standing. DoDEA fully supports and funds the AP Program.

Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-9.

DoDEA communities will join thousands of communities across the nation in celebrating National Teacher Appreciation Week from May 3-9. The special week honors the dedicated men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating children. Eleanor Roosevelt first introduced the idea of National Teacher Day in 1953 to dedicate a week to celebrate the accomplishments of educators.  Today, the National PTA spearheads this national celebration.
