Pacific Theater Education Council (PTEC) visits Pacific schools.  During the week of March 22-27, PTEC members will visit schools in Sasebo, Iwakuni, and Misawa.  The PTEC is comprised of representatives from Pacific Command, Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy representatives.  Following the school visits, the team will meet to review their observations of dependents’ education in the Pacific and make recommendations to the DoDDS-Pacific Director.  Immediately thereafter, the Area Advisory Council Meeting will take place in Misawa, March 30-31.  The AAC, composed of service representatives, school, parent and student representatives advises the DoDDS-Pacific Director on educational and logistical issues affecting children attending DoDDS schools.

MCEC offers scholarships for students to attend the NASA Space Camp.
Deadline is March 10th.  NASA Space Camp is a place where kids come together for a journey they will never forget. Each child learns about astronauts and space travel, and also experiences something even more important: developing bonds of friendship. This is a microcosm of the life of military children. They travel, they learn, and they quickly bond into lifetime friendships. Each student applicant must:
  • be a child of an active duty military parent,
  • be enrolled in grades 6 through 9,
  • submit a Hand-written essay stating why he or she should be selected, evidence of patriotism, future goals, community service, and "after camp" intentions,
  • submit two letters of recommendation with contact information, and
  • complete and submit application by the deadline.
For more detailed information about Space Camp, visit their Web site at: www.spacecamp.com

Spring Recess Slated for April 6-10. Spring recess for schools in the Pacific is scheduled for April 6-10, 2009.  During that time, DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam will not sponsor, sanction, or authorize any school trips or vacation excursions for students. This is a matter of policy and is not related to any specific force protection concern. Parents are advised to carefully research any trips or activities that students are participating in during the upcoming spring recess and at other times of the year.  Each year, many tour companies offer trips to a variety of vacation spots. Some of these trips are marketed as senior trips and can be misleading to parents who think that the trips are sponsored and sanctioned by DoDDS.  There may be legitimate trips offered by community agencies; however, they are not connected with DoDEA.

Congrats are in order for Lauren Wolf and Bruce Pfirrmann.  Ms. Wolfe from Kadena High School and Mr. Pfirrmann from Kinnick High School received notice that they were selected as finalist in the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships. The selection of some 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners from a group of more than 15,000 finalist is now in the process.

AdvancED Teams visit DoDDS-Pacific Schools.  In February, DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam hosted accreditation visits by AdvancEd, formally referred to as The North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI). Team visits were made to the following schools.

Guam
Andersen Elementary School
Andersen Middle School
Guam High School
McCool Elementary and Middle School

Korea
Seoul Elementary School
Seoul High School
Seoul Middle School

Okinawa
E.C. Killin Elementary School
Kubasaki High School
Zukeran Elementary School

In April, teams plan to visit three more schools in mainland Japan, Cummings Elementary School, Edgren Middle School and Sollars Elementary School.  AdvancEd Visiting teams consist of two stateside chairs as well as DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS/Guam teachers and administrators who serve as team augmenters.  Through these partnerships our teachers and administrators have the opportunity to gain valuable insight, validate their strengths, and provide the next steps for school improvement.

The accreditation process is based upon a five year term accreditation. The process helps schools on a continuous process of improvement, providing external checks, support, and feedback to help schools continuously improve.

On the calendar: Month of the Military Child – April 2009.
At a time when our nation is seeking answers for our financial woes, the U.S. Department of the Treasury established the National Financial Literacy Challenge, an initiative recommended by the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. From November to December an hour-long, on-line test was taken by more than 75,000 high school students.  The challenge included questions on basic finance vocabulary, insurance, credit cards, banking, and investments.  Participants were students from rural areas, suburbs, and cities in the United States, as well as Department of Defense schools around the world. Fourteen Kadena HS students scored in the top 25th percentile of the nation’s scores.  The Office of Financial Education at the US Department of Treasury is using this program to raise awareness about financial education.
